In 2019, a moment of creativity turned into a lifeline for many. After our Executive Director’s fashion video went viral, it brought attention to a heartbreaking reality: numerous queer individuals in our community were facing eviction and homelessness. Recognizing the urgent need for a safe space, Nadharia Transitional Home was born.
Since its inception, Nadharia Transitional Home has provided refuge for over 100 queer individuals, offering not just shelter but a sense of community and belonging. Initially funded through our fashion shows and various fundraising events, our resources were often stretched thin. Providing even a simple three-course meal was a challenge, but the unwavering support from our community made it possible. Thanks to generous food donations and financial assistance for rent and utility bills, we managed to keep the home operational.
The impact of Nadharia Transitional Home cannot be overstated. It became more than just a shelter; it was a sanctuary where individuals could find support, acceptance, and a path to stability. One significant challenge we faced was affording therapy services, which are crucial for the well-being of our residents. To address this, we partnered with various organizations that provided much-needed mental health support and counseling services.
Despite our best efforts, we faced adversity from external forces. Last year, our home was raided by the community, forcing us to confront the harsh realities of operating in a hostile environment. This event led to a temporary closure, but our resolve remained strong.
Thanks to the resilience of our community and continued support, we are proud to announce that we reopened Nadharia Transitional Home in February of this year. Our commitment to providing safe and inclusive spaces remains unshaken, and the reopening marks a new chapter in our mission to support and uplift those in need.
As we look to the future, we are more determined than ever to secure and establish safe havens for our community. Join us in this mission. Together, we can create a world where everyone has a place to call home
