Five years ago, the need for an inclusive economic program became glaringly apparent. Many in our community were marginalized, struggling to find stable employment and economic opportunities in a society that often discriminated against them. Recognizing this critical need, Nadharia CBO embarked on a mission to drive inclusive economic development through groundbreaking initiatives aimed at empowering sexual and gender minorities in Kenya.
One of our most ambitious projects to date is the establishment of Kenya’s first queer college, offering vital vocational training in automotive and carpentry skills. This pioneering institution is a beacon of hope, providing a safe and supportive environment where students can learn and thrive.
Recognizing the ever-evolving demands of the job market, we are not stopping there. Nadharia is expanding its curriculum to include financial training and technology integration, equipping students with a diverse and modern skill set. By integrating digital creation and tech skills, we aim to bridge the digital divide and open new avenues for economic empowerment, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the future.
However, our journey has not been without challenges. Last year, we embarked on this project with zero budget, moving forward with determination despite not knowing where the resources would come from. We enrolled 25 enthusiastic students, but due to significant economic challenges, only 11 students were able to sit for their NITA exams. We are incredibly proud of their perseverance, especially considering that one student achieved a first-class grade, though we also faced the reality of one failure.
Underpinning our economic program is the struggle to integrate these valuable skills in a homophobic society. Many of our students face discrimination and societal barriers that hinder their ability to fully utilize their training. This is compounded by the challenge of securing financing to support their endeavors and scale our projects.
To address these challenges, Nadharia is exploring innovative financing options and diversifying our economic ventures. We have initiated projects in agribusiness, including poultry farming and hydroponics, designed to create sustainable income-generating opportunities for our community. These ventures not only provide immediate economic relief but also contribute to long-term stability and growth.
Our holistic approach to economic development is designed to address immediate needs while laying the foundation for future success. By combining vocational training with financial literacy, technological skills, and sustainable farming practices, we are building a comprehensive support system for our community.
Despite the hurdles, our commitment to empowering sexual and gender minorities remains unwavering. With each step forward, we are not only enhancing individual lives but also fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Join us in supporting Nadharia CBO as we continue to innovate, inspire, and transform lives through inclusive economic development.
